How Can YOU Make a Living in the Adult Industry?

Coralyn Jewel

In 2020, a pandemic hit the world and caused financial turmoil. Lost jobs, inability to cover expenses, divorce rates skyrocketed and children's education suffered.

However, there were also some positive aspects that came from the situation. Families got to spend more quality time together, the fast-paced life that so many of us live was halted and forced us to slow down and embrace the little things.

Numerous companies realized that allowing certain employees to work from home was beneficial to both the employee and the company, and once the quarantine restrictions were lifted, some companies permitted their employees to remain remote.

Finally, many were forced to find ways to earn an income while staying home and the rise in "content creators" on platforms such as OnlyFans, Loyalfans, Fansly, and others skyrocketed. The same occurred on webcam platforms. Just everyday people with no acting experience, no modeling training, no broadcast degree — just desperate to find work.

They turned to the adult industry and embarked on something scary but exciting. Six years following the pandemic, many figured out how to navigate their way through the challenges, and when they were given the opportunity to return to their previous employment, many declined and chose to stay in this newfound career.

So How Did They Make It Work?

How do they get followers to view their content, subscribe, find them on a webcam platform with thousands of other more experienced performers? The answer is simply one word: CONSISTENCY.

The Industry Isn't Going Anywhere

Let me begin with the most important piece of this article. No matter how much society continues to try and take down this industry — whether it's adding age verification to platforms, or forcing credit card companies to charge astronomical fees — sex sells and is the oldest profession. The industry is here to stay, and any obstacle thrown at it has been dealt with and overcome.

If you are considering embarking in this constantly changing industry, but are overwhelmed with many unanswered questions and no clue where to begin, I'm here to be your guide.

What You Need to Know Before You Start

1. Accept the Permanence

You must make the decision that anything you put on the internet will remain on the internet. You must be ready for family, friends, and colleagues to access this content and approach you with questions.

2. Find Your Niche

Thousands of other creators are trying to make a career in this industry. What are you going to offer that's unique and different, attracting followers to your platform or page?

3. Commit to Consistency

This is the most important aspect to your success:

  • Social media is a must. You must create a profile on every platform and post numerous times a day.
  • Collaborate with other creators in your niche — tag them on posts, like their posts, repost their posts.
  • Attend all industry events. The educational expos as well as the expos for fans to meet you. Note: all travel is your own personal expense.

4. Invest in Your Equipment

Just a cell phone nowadays is actually acceptable, but quality goes a long way. Investing in lighting, backdrops, editing software, a high-quality webcam, and high-speed internet is going to give you that extra edge against your competitors.

5. Stay Informed

Stay in the loop with the latest industry news — the legal paperwork required, STD testing required, increased costs, the type of content you are allowed to post, and what is against the platform's policies.

Not all platforms are the same. Some allow certain types of fetish content if they are hosted offshore. For example, OnlyFans and Loyalfans have strict rules against certain content, while other platforms hosted offshore may have different guidelines. Always check each platform's terms of service.

6. Know the Rules

Most platforms will flag your post if you use certain prohibited words. The same goes with webcam platforms. Sites will often monitor new creators to ensure compliance with their policies. Always familiarize yourself with each platform's content guidelines and prohibited terms before you begin.

It's Not About Looks

The adult industry in its entirety is no longer based on appearance alone. In fact, a lot of work in this online world does not even involve nudity or any sexual acts.

With access to the internet, the ability to explore curiosity around different kinks and fetishes is now more easily accessible. You can roleplay your fantasy with a complete stranger from the safety of your home, or go to a subscription platform or PPV (pay-per-view) and search for any type of content you can imagine.

The Bottom Line

I truly believe anyone can be successful in this industry, but do not for a second believe what society has portrayed — that appearance is all you need and the money will just come pouring in. On the contrary, this industry is not your typical 9-to-5. It will ultimately come down to your personality, work ethic, and your willingness to learn and grow in this career just like any other.

As I always say, you only have one life to live. Be true to yourself. You control your destiny.

Till next time.
